Around 1920 island owner count Von Bernstorff ordered the planting of a pine forest. Many of the original pine trees are old and exhausted after so many years. Because all these trees have the same age, it is very well possible that soon a lot of pine trees will die all at the same time.
Natuurmonumenten tries to gradually reform the forest into a mixed forest of and coniferous and deciduous trees. Yearly therefore a few trees are cut down, but never more than 1 percent of the forest. The clearings are slowly filled up again by young trees and shrubs. This makes the woods on the island more varied.
